A little bit of history

The garden of the fortified castle is divided by a lengthways walk that ends at the hunting and fishing rotundas, and two crosswalks leading to the statues of Vertumnus and Pomona, two Etruscan gods of gardens. Vertumnus, the god of spring and autumn, is a handsome young man, and Pomona is a charming young woman who presides over blossom-time and fruit. Each carries a horn of plenty, but while Pomona appears to pour out the contents, Vertumnus holds his up straight, apparently indifferent to scattering the contents.

The legend recounts that Vertumnus was in love with Pomona and invented all sorts of ploys to seduce her; it appears that he succeeded...

"Protected by a micro-climate..."

Perched on a rocky escarpment overlooking the Seneffe valley, the Ecaussinnes-Lalaing kitchen garden has been flourishing for centuries in the micro-climate created by the walls that shelter it.

Everyone is welcome!

Created in 1720 by Félicien-Antoine van der Burch, abandoned after the sale of the castle in 1854, and then remade by Count Adrien van der Burch in 1930, this garden is currently being restored. It is a classified monument.
